Abstract
This study was conducted to identify the magnitude of housing poverty among single or coupled elderly households based on minimum housing standards and housing affordability and analyze the factors affecting housing poverty among them using logistic regression. For the analysis, 2,836 households aged 65 or older who have less than 2 members of household and who have satisfied the conditions of their own or spouse were analyzed in the 13th year data (2018) of the Korea Welfare Panel. The analysis shows that 22.1% of single or coupled elderly households were experiencing housing poverty, based on housing affordability and the minimum housing standards, 14% of households were below the minimum housing standard, and 9.8% of households were overburdened with housing costs. In addition, factors affecting housing poverty in single or coupled older households were health conditions, income, non-homeowner, and non-ground-floor residence. The results of this study suggest the need for a housing welfare policy considering the housing poverty characteristics of single or coupled elderly households, such as through rent, repair, and maintenance expense support, support for a barrier-free design, the preparation of institutional systems to improve non-ground-floor residences, and the preparation of various housing alternatives for elderly adults, in order to realize the goal of ¡°aging in place,¡± so that elderly individuals can continue to live in familiar environments.
